Provisional Results 2016-17
Dear Parent/Carer,
The results for the 2016/17 academic year which were published in August are presented below. I have also included historical results going back to 2014 for S4 (when the new NQs started) and to 2012 for both S5 and S6.
These are a summary of results using the benchmarks that have been used for some time. These are one way of considering results and whilst they are useful in comparing year on year performance they cannot show the full picture of attainment and achievement.
First, and foremost, to echo the comments in my Start of Term letter these are very pleasing results, especially for S4. These figures represent the position on the day of results publication and some will change as post-results reviews and the addition of N4 results gained through recognising positive achievement are added.

There was a significant increase in the percentage of pupils gaining 5 or more awards at National 5. Similarly, the percentage with 5 or more qualifications at Level 3 and Level 4 is up considerably at this point and we expect these numbers to increase as those N4 results gained through Recognising Positive Achievement are added. These results are a real credit to pupils and to their teachers as well as to you, the parents and carers. Good results are always a team effort.

The percentage of pupils gaining 5 Higher passes is the best for 5 years as is the percentage gaining at least 1 Higher pass. The percentage gaining 3 or more Higher passes is the best for 4 years. These results represent a strong performance and show that many pupils in S5 clearly pushed on from where they were at the end of S4. Again, a great team effort.

It would be fair to say that the S6 results last year did not move on in the same way that S4 and S5 did. The percentage of pupils gaining 1, 3 or 5 Highers has remained fairly static over the last 5 years with the occasional rise or fall.
As I said these year-group performance benchmarks serve a purpose in comparing current and previous performance but it is how each individual pupil does that matters. Did each pupil achieve the best they were capable of?
That is what we are striving to achieve with each and every pupil in the school – their personal best.
The world that our young people will move into after school quite rightly places a value on academic qualifications and so it is important to mention that within the very good results achieved by the S4 year group were 17 who achieved 8 A grades with one of those achieving all 8 at Band 1. In S5 there were 12 pupils who achieved 5 A grades at Higher including 2 with all five at Band 1.
For those of you with children moving into S4, S5 or S6 I would encourage you to attend the information evenings on the 19th and 20th of September. These important years are about more than ‘just getting through’ and by doing the right things at the right time big differences can be made to outcomes.
Good though many of these results are our challenge is to set the bar of expectation high for every pupil and to work with them and with you to enable as many of our pupils as possible to reach that highest possible standard of personal best.
Yours,
Graham Hamilton

Pupils can be awarded with a National 4 result after initial results have been published in August so these numbers will almost certainly increase for some subjects.
