S6 Advanced Higher Art and English Workshop.

On Wednesday the 30th of October, the Advanced Higher Art and Advanced Higher English students got together in Firrhill’s library for a day long workshop exploring creativity. The day centred around the sculpture “Exit Music” made by an anonymous artist in tribute to author Iain Rankin, and in praise and thanks for the work of the library services. The sculpture was brought to us by Joe and Sally from NLS who also made us aware of the huge variety of resources available through the libraries service.
Hosting the sculpture was made possible by working in partnership with Art Uk and their Masterpieces in Schools Programme.
Art Uk also arranged for the S6 to take part in workshops with illustrator Lucy Roscoe and writer Mary Paulson- Ellis, and in keeping with “Exit Music” the students focused on creative responses to the stimulus of crime scenes. The day generated some really exciting work that can be further developed for use in the Advanced Higher Art and English folios.

Colinton Tunnel Mural.

In September 2019, all S3 Art & Design students had the  chance to work with artists Chris Rutterford and Lubi Lukan for a week on the Colinton Tunnel Mural. This was an amazing opportunity for our students.

They were able to come off timetable and spend an intensive amount of time working on a large scale installation, learning how it grew and developed over the week. Chris and Lubi were so generous with their time and attention, and answered literally hundreds of questions about working as  freelance artists / designers and the wide range of projects they had both been involved in.

The students loved being able to express their own ideas on a large scale, while contributing to a hugely exciting group project that they, their families and communities (many of whom are featured in the mural) will be able to enjoy and be proud of for many years to come.
