I thought it would be better to write to you separately with a few information matters regarding school procedures and looking ahead to next term rather than adding to an already full end of term message.
As the ‘Beast from the East’ reminded us, we occasionallyget severe weather that impacts on the opening of the school. As we enter thewinter season proper it is worth a reminding you what happens if we get badweather, especially heavy snow. In the unlikely event of a school closureparents will be informed by email/text message and information will be postedon the school website if possible. Information about school closures would alsobe available on the Council website www.edinburgh.gov.ukand updates are also issued on Radio Forth. If severe weather is forecast, please check these sources of information regularly as the situation can changerapidly.
Uniform at Firrhill is, on the whole, very good. As every parent knows, children have this annoying habit of growing out of their clothes and new ones have to be bought. If you are going to take advantage of the New Year sales to pick up some uniform items, please take a minute or two to check the uniform guidance on the school website. No matter what you might be told about special arrangements or what is allowed the guidance on the website is the accurate information. Thank you for supporting the dress code and for your ongoing efforts in helping us to maintain high standards of school dress.
I have written a number of times regarding vehicle access onto the school site. The entrance into the school is narrow as is the public road approaching the school gate. Despite my previous requests not to, a number of parents continue to drive into the school grounds to drop off their children. This creates additional congestion and increases the risk of a collision as those vehicles try to exit the school when the majority of traffic is trying to enter the grounds.
There are no dropping off facilities in the school grounds and no visitor parking in the car park. If you are a blue badge holder there are disabled spaces right by the main entrance for your use. If your child has a temporary mobility issue, such as using crutches, then you can drop off using these spaces but please speak to your child’s Pupil Support Leader first to put this arrangement in place. The best place to drop off your child is at the gate, between the astro pitches, on Oxgangs Road North.
After the Christmas holiday we will be monitoring vehicular entry to the school site to ensure that only authorised vehicles are entering the school site at the start of the day. Please assist the safer and quicker flow of traffic onto the site by not driving into the school grounds in the morning.
Parents of pupils in S4 will be aware that the Parents’ Evening for your child will take place on Monday 14th January. To assist parents in booking appointments we will be opening the online booking system on Friday 21st December. Details of how the system operates will be sent to S4 parents and is on the website.
Thank you for your continued support of the school. Whether that is through helping us to maintain high standards of uniform and behaviour, attending parents’ evenings and other events, coaching and/or supporting sports teams, or through being part of the Parent Council or the PTA. The PTA do fantastic work to support the activities of the school including providing the mince pies and mulled wine at the Christmas Concert. You can get more information on getting involved in the Parent Community section of the website.
